How Does Keyword Ranking Work?

Are you planning to start a blog but have no idea on how to promote it? Well, if that’s the situation, I’ll get you familiar with the most important aspect of promoting any website – keyword ranking.

Whether your main platform is a search engine or a social media page, you need to know how to use keywords for both. Even when it comes to brand websites, you cannot promote them offline. If you’re selling online, you need the virtual platforms – Google search, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

So, how does this really work? Let’s start by understanding what keyword ranking really is and how you can go about it.

What Do You Mean by Keyword Ranking?

Actually, the question to start with is – what is a keyword? The word that you type on the search bar is the keyword. For example, if you want to know how to repair a fuse, that’s what you’ll type on the search bar. Not only you, but many other people do search for the same things. Hence, “how to repair a fuse” becomes a keyword.

Now, when you hit enter and come to the search results page, you’ll find a list of websites. Which one will you go to? It’s natural, that you’ll click on the link you see first – the one on top.

This is the concept of search engine marketing and optimization – making the website visible by placing it on top. You’ll only find the website on top when the search engine finds it appropriate according to your query.

Now, your query and that web page link won’t match unless they have the same words. It means, that if the article does not have the question “how to repair a fuse” along with the answer to it, it’s irrelevant. Hence, the search engine can’t rank it.

So, keyword ranking is positioning web pages according to their relevance to your query.

How Does Keyword Ranking Work?

To understand this, you need to know how search engines work. The reason why Google has such a wide user base is because of the relevance it has with your queries. Their aim is to satisfy your query.

Thus, here’s how it works:

  • The search engine has automated robots called “bots” which can crawl through web pages.
  • When you type something on the search bar, the bots search through the web pages that have the same term.
  • Now, the bots are programmed in such a way that they understand English well. So, it can understand whether the rest of the content is appropriate to your query or not.

Today, you perhaps landed on this page because you wanted to know how to use keywords for ranking your website. Here’s what the bots looked for:

  • Presence of the keyword in the title, sub-headings, meta description, introduction and body of the article
  • Relevance of the keywords with the rest of the content
  • Presentation of the content – style of writing, presence of images or videos, supporting links, etc.
  • Popularity of the web page – the amount of traffic it has received so far and its bounce rate
  • How recently has the page been updated – is it relevant on today’s date or it’s old news?

All of this is taken into account, the first two being most important. Now, if you want to rank your website for various keywords, you need to know your competition. Not only that, after publishing your page, you need to continuously track your rank.

How to do this? This is where I’ll introduce you to a keyword rank tracker or checker tool.

What is a Keyword Rank Checker?

There are several names to this tool – keyword position checker, google rank checker, SEO rank checker, SEO rank tracker. By these names, you might be able to possibly figure out what this is all about.

A keyword rank checker is a software that can give you the position of a website on the search engine results page for a particular keyword. You need to type the keyword and enter the domain of the website. You can also choose the country, as different websites are targeted towards different audiences (geographically too).

There are plenty of free keyword rank checker tools out there which you can use to follow up on your website’s ranking. If your website ranks in the top 100 also, you’ll know its exact position from here. Else, you’ll know how much hard work you actually need.

Keyword Tracker VS Website Rank Checker

There is a thin line of difference between a keyword rank checker and a website rank checker. If you visit a site that offers the latter, you only have to enter the domain name of the website. Hence, a website rank checker tool is a software that simply tells you the overall ranking of your website.

Here, you’ll also know which keywords you rank for, your overall bounce rate and many other factors that affect its ranking. You may say that these tools give you an SEO report for your website. Usually, paid subscriptions to such tools provide you with greater details.

On the contrary, a keyword position checker gives you a very specific keyword ranking report.

So, when to use a keyword tracker and when to use a website rank checker?

If you want to see whether your website is ranking for a particular keyword or not, you use the keyword position checker tool. On the other hand, if you want to track the overall performance of your website, you use the website rank checker.

How Does a Keyword Rank Checker Work?

The keyword rank tracker has its own set of robots, just like the search engine. However, instead of crawling through web pages, it crawls through search engine results pages.

You may say that its function is exactly the opposite of search engines. Search engines crawl through web pages to decide which one should top the results page. On the other hand, rank trackers crawl through the search engine results page, find your domain there and tell you its exact, real-time position.

If you use a paid version, it may be possible to even find out who is on the no. #1 position for the particular keyword.

Please note here, a google rank checker will give you only the organic keyword rankings, not the paid ones. The links that you see with the word “Ad” on their left are there on the search results page due to the money they paid the search engine.

How to Find Keywords in an Article?

If you really want to rank your page on google, you need to beat the website that already is. You need to study that web page carefully – how it has placed its keywords, how many links it has, how many other sites point to that web page and every other factor that can affect its ranking.

Here’s how you can manually study the keyword placement in any article:

  • Study the phrase used in the title.
  • In the meta description, look for the word that is marked in bold.
  • Open the link and look for the phrase in the first paragraph, even if it is just one line.
  • Look for the same in the first sub-heading and the conclusion.
  • Study the other subheadings too.
  • Read the entire article and see how randomly its synonyms have been placed too.

When you do this, you’ll get a brief idea of how the web page has been optimized using keywords. With the help of some other free SEO tools, you can make an analysis of the web page, that highlights other keywords it has used, the number of times it has used the keywords and other factors that matter for ranking.

Are You Ready for Ranking Your Website for the Keyword of Your Choice?

Search engine optimization is a tedious task. If you think you can do it all by yourself in a few minutes, you’re probably mistaken. You will need an expert who has access to tools like a keyword researcher, page rank checker and SEO auditor.

You can hire a virtual assistant for this job, who can remotely do the work for you at a very reasonable rate. Since they have access to the best tools and the experience, they can do it better than anyone else. If you choose to do it yourself, you might need to take a course on search engine optimization and take out time separately to practice it.

What you read here on keyword ranking was just the tip of the iceberg. The truth is that there are millions of websites that are trying to compete on the web for ranking that one keyword. That’s the reason why ranking web pages is no cake walk.
