5 Reasons Why You Should Have an Electric Car

Why You Should Have an Electric Car? With fuel prices touching the sky, have you considered of driving a vehicle that doesn’t need one? Yes, I’m talking about buying an electric car for a change – one that doesn’t need fuel to run at all. This is exactly what Tesla Motors is known for and many other car brands are also making them now.

What might surprise you to know is that the concept of electric cars is not new at all. In fact, the first electric car came out way back in the 1880s – and I’m not talking about chariots and horse carriages. It was very much a real, battery-driven vehicle; only it looked a little different from the cars we have today.

What is an Electric Car?

To define it very simply, it’s a car that uses an electric motor and rechargeable batteries to run in the same speed as our fuel cars. In fact, they’re actually faster and don’t even make a noise when you start the engine or start driving.

When you’re driving a normal fuel car, what you actually do is burn the petrol, diesel or gas that actually gets the car into motion. A point comes when your fuel is over and you need to buy more and refill the tank. Additionally, you also have a battery starts the motor in the first place.

Now, coming to an electric car – it is the battery that will start the car and it is the battery that runs it too. So, a point will come when this battery is simply out of power. What you’re doing here is just recharging it. That’s a service you take from electric car charging stations – you’re not buying anything that’s going to deplete.

How Does it Work?

While a fuel car works with a combustion engine, an electric vehicle has an electric engine – one that is run completely by rechargeable batteries. Following are the various parts of an electric car and their respective functions:

Electric car battery: You have the auxiliary battery that powers the all the other vehicle components when you start the engine.  Meanwhile, the traction battery pack, a set of many rechargeable batteries runs the vehicle.

Electric motor: It takes power from the traction battery and drives the wheels of the vehicle.

Transmission: It transfers mechanical power from the motor to the vehicle wheels.

DC converter: This converts high-voltage DC supplied by the traction battery pack to low-voltage DC to run the vehicle. Additionally, it also recharges the auxiliary battery.

Power electronics controller: It manages the flow of energy and controls the speed of the motor.

Thermal cooling system: If you don’t have this working properly, your engine can get really hot.

Charging port: When you need to recharge the traction battery pack, you supply the power from here.

Onboard charger: When you recharge an electric car battery, the charging port will supply AC electricity. The onboard charger will convert it into DC power so that the battery charges.

What are the Benefits of Having an Electric Car?

Electric cars don’t just benefit the environment. They also benefit you. Since we all are at a point where saving the planet is important, any alternative that a scientist will design will be encouraging for you to use. It means that an eco-friendly product today comes with other perks that will encourage you to use it even if you don’t care about the environment.

Following are the main benefits of having an electric car:

Cheaper to Maintain

You’re driving a car that needs no fuel. All you have to do is get the battery recharged, which will cost you less than $3. Even if you charge it too often, your annual maintenance cost will be much lesser as compared to gasoline or fuel cars.

Did you know that 75% of the air pollution in the US is caused by vehicles? Not only that, it is one of the most significant sources of noise pollution too. Now, imagine if even more than half of the vehicle owners switched to a car that neither runs on fuel, nor makes a noise – how much cleaner and quieter will the world become.

As compared to fuel cars, they actually have a greater speed. When you accelerate, it takes less than 8 seconds to achieve a 0-60 mph speed. In fact, the good ones will not even take 3 seconds to achieve the speed.

You do know the sound an engine makes when you start the car. As you start driving, the sound is softer but still there. With time, car engines have become less noisy. However, if you are running an electric engine, it is going to be as quiet as your electric AC.

The body of an electric car is much stronger than a regular combustion engine car. Thus, it has greater capability to withstand collisions. Moreover, it has lesser chances of catching fire or rolling over in an accident as they have low-gravity centres.
